I was given a gift yesterday. It wasn’t designer, it was not expensive; it did not cause folks to stand in line and rearrange bills on order to be the first to say they had it. It doesn’t zip, zap or zoom and I can’t show it off to my friends.
It was a gift none the less and it was given at just the precise moment of need. Have you ever been given a gift from someone you know but maybe not all that well?
There’s an awkwardness of energy between you, the first pangs of creating familiarity are breached, a few endearing words are exchanged and the gift is given.
You should keep these brief encounters in remembrance.
These are the moments that should carry you. They should lift you higher than the negative impact of packaging your life into an 8 hour parcel to carry to work or school tends to bury you.
I did not have to hold out my hands to receive my gift, it did not need unwrapped, it was the gift of appreciation. It was unexpectedly clear and unapologetically declared. I graciously accepted it; tucked it away in my parcel and will cherish it for the gift it is. In the moments when you are stressed; unfurl your life’s backpack, pick out your awkward firsts or unsteady beginnings and smile at their newness.
